I Saw A Bronx Tale and Stagedoored!!!

Another crazy thing that happened while I was on break here… I got to see the touring production of A Bronx Tale on Mother’s Day with my family, and we just so happened to be walking out to the parking garage when the actors were coming out to stagedoor. We didn’t even know there WAS a stagedoor for the show, but I convinced my family to walk across the street at the perfect time! Here’s who I got to meet! (I would post more about seeing the show itself, but meeting the cast was such an adrenaline rush that it’s difficult to remember everything before it…)

First of all, one of my favorites, Joshua Burrage! He played one of the Doo-Wop boys throughout the show! Before Bronx Tale, Joshua was an iconic original Newsie! He’s super sweet in person and he took a picture with me! I’m a little bit ashamed to say I didn’t even recognize him at first because he had a hat on and I was so amazed in general that I didn’t even process that it was him! Joshua was also nice enough to get someone else over to me, and guess who that was?

It was Joey Barreiro! Joey played Calogero, the main character, in the show. He was also a Newsie, and a “Toursie!” In fact, on the first National Tour of Newsies, he was Jack Kelly! And you can hear the Jack Kelly-ness in his voice when he sings, which made it even more enjoyable! And he was also very sweet to me. I actually have a picture of me between him and Joshua, which is literally SO. COOL.

Thirdly, I met Joe Barbara! He’s much lesser-known than the aforementioned two, but he has a really impressive number of professional (Broadway, tours, regional, workshops) credits, which was evident in his performance. He played Sonny, one of the most important supporting leads in the musical. He too was really sweet and even told me I had a pretty name and took a picture with me. It was also raining that night, so he signed my playbill on the inside so it wouldn’t get washed off.

I met a couple other cast members, but in all honesty, I don’t know who they are. It was dark, and they didn’t sign legibly, and I was too happy to pay that much attention. But I’m still so happy that I was able to experience that, and I hope when I see Dear Evan Hansen at the same theater in a few weeks, I can stagedoor again! (He-llo? It’s Ben Levi Ross!)

Oh and also, if you don’t know this show, I highly recommend it! It’s seriously underappreciated in general. It has amazing music and music style in general, and the story-line is extra suspenseful and immersive. 10/10.

What show do you want me to talk about next? I think I might change my posting schedule. And by that I mean there will pretty much always be a post on Sunday, but some weeks there might be 2 other ones on Tuesday and Thursday and others just one other post on Wednesday. I’m not quite sure yet.

2019 Tony Award Predictions

As you probably know, it’s award season for Broadway shows, and the Tony Awards are approaching fast! Here are my picks for the winners! (Just the musical ones, I’m not as well-versed in the straight plays…)

Best Musical: Hadestown all the way, which will anger the Prom stans on Instagram, but deep down everybody will know that Hadestown deserved it.
Best Musical Revival: Oklahoma! I've heard many good things about this show, and nothing much about Kiss Me, Kate. Though I could be totally wrong...
(I hope Boys in the Band wins in its category... I love Andrew Rannells)
Best Book of a Musical: I can't say for sure, but I'm really predicting a Hadestown sweep, so I'll say Hadestown.
Best Original Score: Can I make a 3 way tie? If so, Hadestown, Be More Chill (it's so technologically impressive!), and To Kill A Mockingbird (it's Adam Guettel! The man has award-winner blood!)
Best Direction of a Musical: Rachel Chavkin for Hadestown, she also directed Great Comet on Broadway.
Best Leading Actor in A Musical: Alex Brightman for Beetlejuice, he's a comedic GOD.
Best Leading Actress in a Musical: I really think it'll be Eva Noblezada for Hadestown, and as much as I love her, I really hope it's Stephanie J. Block for The Cher Show. The woman is more deserving of a Tony than anyone.
Best Featured Actor in a Musical: Patrick Page. Hadestown. Change. My. Mind.
Best Featured Actress in a Musical: AMBER. FREAKING. GRAY. Have I not made myself clear? I love her.
Best Scenic Design of a Musical: Either Hadestown or Beetlejuice.
Best Costume Design: As much as I like Paul Tazewell's work, he can't beat Hadestown's Michael Krass.
Best Lighting Design of a Musical: I honestly don't know, but uh Hadestown.
Best Sound Design of a Musical: *see above*
Best Choreography: For real, I don't know with this one. Like I want it to be Hadestown, but I don't know.
Best Orchestrations: HADESTOWN FOR SURE I MEAN COME ON.
So...yeah. Those are my picks. What are yours?

Hadestown: the Myth. the Musical. (I’m Back!)

Hey guys! I’m back from my short disappearance. School is out now so I should be back to posting pretty regularly. And while I was away, I got totally obsessed with a show that’s brand new to Broadway, but already has a pretty big fanbase, and for good reason too. That musical, as I’m sure you’ve figured out from the title, is Hadestown! I love every aspect of this musical! I’m new to it still, though, and I’ve only heard the songs that are on the 2016 live workshop album. I want to talk about some of the things that make this show so unique and beautiful!

Score/Orchestrations: WOW! This show has probably the most talented pit I’ve heard in a long time! The rhythms and harmonies are so intricate and interesting, unlike anything I’ve heard before. The best description I have to offer is a mix of Bandstand, The Band’s Visit, and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812. The songs range from 30’s and 50’s swing jazz to soft ballads to near-tribal and reminiscent of Middle Eastern traditional music. One specific part of this score I want to point out is the PERCUSSION! It’s astounding! A lot of modern shows have pretty basic drum music, which I notice, being a percussionist myself, but this show is really fun to listen to and seemingly quite challenging in comparison! In one particular song, “Our Lady of the Underground,” each member of the band is introduced to the audience by Persephone, which is also not common in musical theatre.

Cast: Again, wow! I am completely impressed! First of all, the obvious- Patrick Page! The man’s range is incredible! I read that his lowest note as Hades himself is a G1, and for those who don’t know the terminology, that’s almost at the bottom of a standard 88 key piano/keyboard. This note, for those who know this show, occurs multiple times in “Hey, Little Songbird” and also when Hades sings, “sing for an old *man.*” (I also heard C#1, but that’s hard to believe.) Secondly, the actor who plays Orpheus, I believe named Reeve Carney, (again I’m new to the fandom) has the most attractive voice I’ve ever heard. His higher range is just beautiful. No questions asked. Bless your ears by listening to “Epic II”- just trust me. You won’t be disappointed. Amber Gray is a great Persephone, showcased best in “Livin’ It Up On Top” and “Our Lady of The Underground.” Eurydice, who is played by Eva Noblezada on Broadway but I’m not sure if it’s her on the recording, also has the perfect voice for her character.

Couple Chemistry: It’s perfect for the context of the show! Orpheus and Eurydice convey their desperate longing for each other when separated by the walls of Hadestown without even having a visual display. Hades and Persephone also display the complexity of their relationship by their voices alone in such a way that has made me tear up multiple times.

Storyline: Honestly, I’m a little confused still, so if anyone wants to help me out with that, it’d be greatly appreciated… I know it’s the Orpheus myth, but it’s a lot to process when listening to the cast album. I love the industrialist twist on the story, though! It’s such an interesting and eye-opening take on things.

Other Things: *My favorite songs from the show are “Wait For Me” and “Epic II,” followed closely by the finale, “Road to Hell II” and “Chant,” but honestly I love every song in the show so so much. *One thing that sticks out to me a lot is in “Why We Build the Wall,” Hades sounds so controlling. The song creates this complex between an overlord and his subjects that really shows Hades’ personality better than anything else in the show. *The song “Wait For Me II” makes me cry every. Single. Time. And I literally can’t figure out why to save my life. *The Fates are such cool characters! I’m generally a fan of characters who play parts in the story but are also narrators, like these three or Aaron Burr. *AMBER GRAY WOW IF SHE DOESN”T WIN BEST FEATURED ACTRESS I’LL SUE THE TONY AWARDS. *Speaking of Tony Awards, I feel another sweep coming on this year…

So, those are my thoughts on Hadestown! What musical do you want my opinion on next? Let me know! Also, what are your Tony predictions? It’s good to be back with this blog ❤
